An Eleven Energy Sodium Battery on the outside of a house.

As global energy demand continues to rise and the transition toward renewable power accelerates, the need for reliable and affordable sustainable energy storage has never been greater. This is where the sodium-ion battery steps in as one of the most exciting advancements in modern battery science.

Leveraging the earth’s abundant sodium resources, these systems promise to deliver scalable, safe, and cost-effective energy storage solutions without relying on rare or expensive materials. Over the coming years, sodium-ion battery technology is expected to play a central role in residential and commercial renewable energy applications.

What is a Sodium Battery?

A sodium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions (Na⁺) to store and release electrical energy. At their core, they operate on the same fundamental principles as lithium-ion batteries, but they replace lithium with sodium, an element that is vastly more abundant, affordable, and easier to source.

Sodium batteries are especially well-suited for applications where safety, longevity, and cost are more important than ultra-high energy density. This includes home battery systems, grid balancing, off-grid power, renewable integration, and commercial energy storage.

What are The Benefits of Sodium Battery Storage?

Although sodium battery storage and lithium-ion batteries operate on similar principles, their characteristics, advantages, and ideal use cases differ in important ways. Understanding these differences is essential for anyone considering next-generation storage solutions.

Safety

Sodium battery energy storage solutions exhibit excellent thermal stability and are much less prone to overheating or thermal runaway. They can also be fully discharged to 0% without damage, making transportation and long-term storage safer.

Lithium-ion batteries, while highly energy dense, require sophisticated battery management systems to control heat and maintain safe operation. Under extreme conditions, they can pose a fire risk.

Performance

Sodium battery storage generally has a lower energy density today, but are rapidly improving. For stationary storage where size and weight are less important, their performance is more than sufficient. They have a longer cycle life and also operate reliably across a broad temperature range, particularly outperforming lithium in cold climates.

Sodium batteries can also act as a smart energy manager, not just a storage device. This means they can meter other devices such as EV chargers or heat pumps, controlling how much power they use to avoid discharging batteries unnecessarily.

Environmental Impact

Sodium extraction is significantly less harmful to the environment because sodium is abundant and easy to process. Sodium-ion chemistries avoid the intensive mining operations associated with cobalt and nickel.

Lithium extraction, particularly from brine fields and hard rock mining, has been criticised for its high-water usage, habitat disruption, and environmental degradation. With global demand for lithium climbing, these concerns are becoming increasingly significant.

Material Availability and Cost

Sodium batteries are made using materials such as sodium, iron, and manganese, elements that are widely available across the globe. Because sodium is found naturally in seawater and common rock salts, supply constraints are minimal, and costs remain low.

Lithium batteries, on the other hand, rely heavily on lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These are far less abundant, concentrated in only a few countries, and subject to volatile pricing.
